Primary One

Welcome to our Primary One Page!

A week in P1 is busy with lots of different learning opportunities. We have Play Time both indoors and outdoors where we focus on our Topic. We also have time for Literacy, Numeracy, Music, PE and much more. We love to explore, investigate and discover new things. Here are the topics we cover throughout the year…..

Rhyme Time

We begin our year by looking at lots of familiar nursery rhymes. Through the rhymes we explore areas such as rhythm, rhyme, shapes, colours and counting. Humpty Dumpty, Jack and Jill and Incy Wincy Spider and other well-known characters all pop by to help make our start to school fun and exciting.

We’re Going on a Bear Hunt

This topic is based around the story of ‘We’re Going on a Bear Hunt’. We think about how the characters feel during different parts of the story and go on our own bear hunt! We think about our own teddy bears and look at what teddy bears looked like a long time ago. As the topic moves on we find out about the different types of bears and where they live in our world. We take a trip to Crawfordsburn Country Park to observe seasonal changes and discuss hibernation and nocturnal animals.

Our Big World

We begin this topic by thinking about the types of homes we live in and where they are located. The children will share their favourite places to visit in Bangor and look at where it is on a map. We move on to look at the UK and Ireland and discuss how we would travel to various countries. With Chinese New Year celebrations taking place at this time, we taste Chinese food and have a go at our own dragon dance.  Our journey takes us to the Cold Lands of Planet Earth. We look at the Arctic and Antarctic, think like a polar explorer and investigate all the wonderful creatures that live in these frozen lands.

In this topic we look at the many different types of dinosaurs that existed and we try to learn some of their names. We create our own Dinosaur World and find out about the work of a paleontologist. We even make our own fossils. During this topic we take a trip to The Ulster Museum for a Dinosaur workshop.

Beside the Seaside

We spend the summer term thinking about the wonderful life around our seashore. Through the story of The Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch we take a closer look at lighthouses and why they are so important. We explore life inside a rockpool and investigate some of the ways we can be safe at the beach and in the sun. We also take a trip to our local RNLI lifeboat station where we hear about rescues they have to make and we even step onboard the lifeboat. Of course no trip to the Seaside would be complete without an ice-cream. As summer is just around the corner we think about holidays and step back in time to discover what kind of holidays people had 100 years ago.
